Het schilderij ‘Old City’ werd in één laag geschilderd met acrylverf in warme tinten op papier. De kunstenaar heeft het in korte fracties geschilderd en heeft bewust de witte plekken en vegen achtergelaten zoals ze ze ook ziet in de fracties in haar hoofd. Het is heel intuitief verder afgewerkt tot een abstract werk. Geïnspireerd op verre reizen en beeldt een oude stad met warme gloed uit, weerspiegeld in het water.

The painting ‘Old City’ was painted in one layer with acrylic paint in warm tones on paper. The artist painted it in short fractions, deliberately leaving white spots and smudges as she sees them in her mind. It was intuitively finished into an abstract work. It is inspired by distant travels and depicts an ancient city with a warm glow reflected in the water.

Het schilderij “The Theologians” is gebaseerd op een foto die ik bewust gekozen heb uit één van de vele personeelsfoto’s van het feestelijke gebeuren ter afsluiting van het academiejaar. De fotograaf nam deze foto op de trappen van het Pauscollege. De manier waarop deze professoren poseerden voor de camera en de kostuums die zij droegen, de plooien, hun armen en benen, maakten meer indruk op mij dan hun gezichten zelf. Door mijn doofheid ben ik visueler aangelegd dan horende personen en kijk ik graag naar mensen hun bewegingen, lichaamstaal, emoties, enz. Voor dit werk heb ik de hoofden weggelaten. Ik vind dat het uiterlijk van deze personen, hun eigenheden en kleine herkenbaarheden zorgen voor meer diepgang en kracht. Een gezicht onthou je snel, een gezicht kan je ‘fake’ doen overkomen. In dit schilderij probeer ik mensen mee te laten zoeken en beleven doorheen de lichaamstaal van deze geleerden. Voor mij bezit het werk veel karakter en een vleugje nostalgie.

The painting “Theologians” is based on a photo that I deliberately chose from one of the many staff photos from the festive event that concludes the academic year. The photographer took this photo on the steps of the Pope's College. The way these professors posed for the camera and the costumes they wore, the folds, their arms and legs, impressed me more than their faces themselves. Because of my deafness, I am more visually inclined than hearing persons and I love to watch people's movements, body language, emotions, etc. For this work, I omitted the heads. I find that the appearance of these persons, their idiosyncrasies and small recognizabilities provide more depth and power. A face you can quickly remember, a face can also feel “fake”. In this painting I try to let people search and experience with me through the body language of these scholars. For me, the work possesses a lot of character and a touch of nostalgia.

DANCERS BEHIND THE SCENES

Dit werk met dansers achter de coulissen is geïnspireerd op momenten toen ik er als kind vaak van droomde om zelf ooit een ballerina te worden, door de jaren die ik als moeder steeds mee mocht kijken naar de wekelijkse balletlessen van mijn drie dochters én door de vele ballet repetities en optredens. Ik keek vaak naar de voeten van de ballerina’s omdat ik de muziek niet kon horen. Vandaar de nadruk op het voetenwerk achter de coulissen in dit schilderij.

This work with dancers behind the scenes is inspired by moments when, as a child, I often dreamed of becoming a ballerina myself someday as well as by the years I spent as a mother watching my three daughters' weekly ballet classes and by the many ballet rehearsals and performances. I often watched the ballerinas' feet because I could not hear the music. Hence the emphasis on the footwork behind the scenes in this painting.

Naar aanleiding van de laatste expositie waaraan ik heb deelgenomen, heb ik dit kunstwerk gemaakt. De expositie heette ‘Face’ en stond in teken van gezichten. Naar mijn mening is dit een speelser werk. Het gelaat van deze jonge vrouw heeft iets stoers en nodigt de toeschouwer uit haar in de ogen te kijken. Op deze manier wordt de blik van de toeschouwer gevangen in het schilderij. Om het zwart-witte portret meer speels en levendig te maken heb ik er een puzzel-werk van gemaakt met een achtergrond in munt-kleur voor een frisse vintage look. Zo komt het gezicht meer naar voren en creëer ik meer diepgang.

On the occasion of the last exhibition in which I participated, I created this artwork. The exhibition was called “Face” as it was dedicated to faces. In my opinion, this is a more playful piece. The face of this young woman has something tough and invites the viewer to look into her eyes. In this way, the viewer's gaze is captured in the painting. To make the black and white portrait more playful and lively, I turned it into a puzzle-work with a background in mint color for a fresh vintage look. This way the face is more prominent and I create more depth.
